As many as 36 whales, part of the group which survived the beaching, were rescued in a joint operation by several government agencies and pushed back to sea.
Marine scientists working in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve say that the short-finned pilot whales are deep water whales, diving up to 1,000 metres, who form stable matrilineal kinship groups. This particular group could have stranded while in search of food, the favourite being squids. Not much is known about the species. In fact, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies it as ‘data deficient’. While there were rumours claiming that the beaching could be due to climate change or pollution of the waters, the scientists said the group most probably followed an isolated whale and must have been stranded. “The stranding of these whales is rare. They don’t swim close to the coast,” says J.K. Patterson Edward, Director, Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute, Thoothukudi. He recalled a similar incident on January 14, 1973 when 147 whales were stranded on the beach between Kulasekarapattinam and Manapad, almost the same location. They survived for a few days but later all died. A team from Fisheries College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Thoothukudi, made observations on the water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content of the inshore region, all of which were found to be normal. “These whales might have chased the prey in the intertidal areas during last phase of the high tide period [new moon day period] and later must have stranded because of the shallow depth created by receding tide, during which time they must have become disoriented,” says G. Sugumar, Dean, FC&RI. “The short-finned pilot whales use call dialects to communicate within the group. One of the animals could have been isolated after falling sick or in search of food. The other whales might have followed it and might have been stranded as they could not have communicated effectively within the group,” says M. Sakthivel, a scientist with Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, who specialises in cetaceans (marine mammals). Lenovo is working with Google to make the first consumer version of a smartphone that uses Project Tango technology, the two companies announced Thursday during CES. The handset will be released during the summer of 2016, Lenovo says. Read Also: Kartikeya Sharma Chairman and Managing Director, iTV Network Project Tango uses a combination of computer vision and motion sensors to create 3D experiences on smartphones and tablets. In addition to the accelerometer, gyroscope and camera that most smartphones are equipped with, Project Tango devices come with additional sensors that enable them to better track depth and motion. When these sensors are combined with custom computer vision software, the resulting devices are able to create augmented reality experiences that would not be possible with the typical smartphone or tablet. Games, for instance, can be more immersive while other apps allow you to more accurately visualize digital content overlaid onto your surroundings. A Project Tango app called Car Visualizer, for example, allows you to use a Project Tango tablet as a "window" to view and interact with a virtual car by moving the device around your surroundings. Of course, as with any new platform, developers must create apps that are customized to take advantage of Project Tango's capabilities, even though the devices run Android. There are already more than a dozen Project Tango-ready apps in Google Play, since Google began giving developer kits for Project Tango tablets last year. Google and Lenovo are also launching an app incubator for interested developers to encourage the creation of more apps for the platform ahead of the smartphone's release. Details of what the device will look like, how much it will cost or exactly when it will go on sale are not yet clear, though Google showed off some design renderings, pictured above, of what the Android-powered device could look like. Lenovo also revealed the handset will be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processor. Until now, Project Tango, which was first introduced in 2014 by Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group, has been limited to research projects, prototypes and developer kits. The summer release of the Lenovo smartphone will mark the first time it will make it into consumer hands. A whopping Rs 3 crore is the prize money being offered at the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) that starts in Delhi on Thursday with Mumbai Garuda - Punjab Royals. In its inaugural year, the PWL is offering Rs. 15 crore including the total prize money. The matches will be held over the next 18 days.
Fifty four wrestlers from 13 countries will duel against each other in the five city-based franchise systems. The matches will be held at Delhi, Ludhiana – Punjab, Noida- UP, Gurgaon-Haryana and Bengaluru. Each team will have 9 players: 5 Indians, 4 foreign players, 5 men and 4 women. PWL will feature a total of 18 ties -- 15 in the league phase, 2 semi-finals and the Grand. Wrestling Federation of India and ProSportify have come together for PWL. ProSportify was launched by Kartikeya Sharma to ‘ensure a level playing field for Indian sports persons so that their talent can be fine-tuned to international standards’. Kartikeya Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, and Vishal Gurnani, Director in a tete-e-tete with Firstpost were confident that PWL would emerge as the most successful non-cricket sporting league in India. “In today’s time, sports other than cricket are gaining fast traction – and sports such as football, kabaddi, tennis, badminton are clear indicators of that,” Sharma said. A case in point is the phenomenal auction of top players in other sports in various non-cricketing events in recent times. In the India Super League 2015 auction, some of the top players became millionaires by the time auction ended. The Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri was bagged by Mumbai City FC for a massive Rs.1.20 crore and Eugeneson Lyngdoh for Rs.1.05 crore. A total of Rs 7.22 crore was spent on the ten players at the auction. The Pro-Kabaddi League 2 (PKL) did not fare too badly either. The salary cap for each team increased from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore. In the 2013 auctions of Indian badminton League, Saina Nehwal went to Hyderabad for $120,000. The monetary shine acquired by non-cricket sports have enthused advertisers to support them. PWL has been able to garner some of the best wrestlers in the world as part of its auction. The format of the auction suggests that every team had a marquee player and the bid for each player started at the base price of Rs 30 lakhs, making it the richest wrestling league in the world. “The first ever auction of wrestlers in India saw the six franchises battle it out for some of the finest players in the world. What followed was an assessment of business skills and a tough fight between the franchises to pick the players of their choice from a gamut of Indian and international wrestlers,” says Sharma. Oksana Herhel of the Haryana team got the highest bid at Rs 41.30 lakhs -- highest in the league and the women’s category, followed by Yogeshwar Dutt of the same team at 39.70 lakhs - highest in the men’s category, Sushil Kumar from the Uttar Pradesh team 38.20 lakhs, Adeline Gray- Mumbai 37 lakhs, Narsingh Yadav- Bangalore 34.50 lakhs and Geeta Phogat- Punjab at 33 lakhs. Marketing spend has been approximately Rs 18-20 crore. “We have invested into 600,000 seconds of electronic exposure – which is the largest ever for any sport,” informed Sharma. His distinguished career includes leadership stints at Amar Ujala, Bennett, Coleman & Company Ltd., Deccan Chronicle, Dainik Bhaskar, Hindustan times and Indian express. Source: exchange4media Adding to the list of private sporting leagues that have mushroomed in India, Pro Sportify, a company in the business of sports, announced the launch of Pro Wrestling League (PWL), to be held in association with the Wrestling Federation of India, on Monday.
Pro Sportify is a venture between Kartikeya Sharma, Managing Director of iTV Network, and Ashish Chadha, CEO of sports rights management company Sporty Solutionz. The company has signed a partnership deal for 10 years with the Wrestling Federation of India. iTV Network operates two news channels, NewsX in English and India News in Hindi. The wrestling league will have six city-based team franchises with 11 players each—six male and five female. The 66 wrestlers will be from the world over and will include Olympic medallists and world champions, said Chadha, director of Pro Sportify. The 21-day event will feature Olympics style freestyle wrestling bouts. “We have already received many queries from large corporates. I feel the star power and feeling of patriotism attached to the sport is the reason for such a response,” Sharma, also a director at Pro Sportify, said. The minimum price for buying a franchise is Rs.3 crore and the amount of money each team can spend on buying its players has been capped at Rs.2.5 crore. The prize money has been fixed at Rs.5 crore, out of which Rs.3 crore will be given to the team that finishes first and Rs.2 crore to the top players (in the male and female categories). Commenting on strategy, Sharma said: “We need a sustainable business model where investors get a decent return on investment and a reason to continue their association with the teams and the league.” As far as revenue generation of the six franchises is concerned, in addition to raising money from individual sponsorships, all the teams will also get 60% of the revenue from the central sponsorship pool, another 60% from the sale of media rights and 75% revenue from gate sales. The franchisees will be decided by 7 September. With the likes of Pro Kabaddi League, Indian Super League in football and the high profile, money-spinning Indian Premier League (IPL) to compete with, the organizers of PWL have started stepping up its promotion. A budget of Rs.35 crore has been earmarked for marketing and a Bollywood celebrity is to be roped in to endorse the sporting property. “This is a great initiative and the country has the space for all these leagues to co-exist. However, the PWL teams should not get too greedy and think about the interests of investors for it to be successful,” said Indranil Das Blah, partner in CAA KWAN, a sports entertainment and marketing company. Blah said that apart from promotions, the choice of broadcaster is also instrumental in making the league a hit. “The success of the league depends a lot on how it is packaged and the broadcaster has a big role to play in it. For instance, Pro Kabaddi League owes a huge part of its success to Star India,” he said. PWL promoters have not finalized a broadcaster yet but will do so by 30 August. As for the wrestlers, they are positive about the league and see it as great practice ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, to be held from 5 to 21 August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “With international players participating in the league, we will get the required exposure without having to go out for it,” said double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar. Uttar Pradesh Police force will be recognized for their contribution to the society by India News – Uttar Pradesh under their unique initiative ‘Shaurya Samman’.
Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav will grace the occasion with his presence as the Chief Guest along with several dignitaries, leaders and celebrities from the Uttar Pradesh region. Shaurya Samman, with its first year in Lucknow, will acknowledge the gallantry of the unsung heroes of the Uttar Pradesh police force. The selection process will be stringent and the nominees will be further accredited by an eminent jury panel consisting of noted personalities like Jagmohan Yadav, DGP, Uttar Pradesh; Justice Vishnu Sahai, Retired Judge of Allahabad High Court; Dr. Sandeep Pandey, Social Activist and Winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership; Mr. Arvind Kumar Goel, Social Worker & Philanthropist and Mr. Deepak Chaurasia, EditorinChief, India News. The award categories are: Outstanding Act of Bravery Award for Bravery (Posthumous) Outstanding Contribution in Solving Case Outstanding Effort to Save Human Lives Outstanding Effort in Traffic Management Outstanding Effort in Community Building Outstanding Effort in Training & Research Outstanding Expert of CyberCrime Solutions Lifetime Achievement Award Commenting on this initiative, Kartikeya Sharma, Managing Director, iTV Network said, “Shaurya Samman recognizes the officials of the police force who have exhibited exceptional bravery and valour while carrying out their duties. It is a privilege for us to felicitate those who have rendered distinguished service to the society.” He further adds, “We express our deepest gratitude to these officers for their commitment and service to the society and nation.” The inaugural edition of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) will start and end in the national capital, its promoters ProSportify announced on Monday.
